How to prepare for MRCS – Paper Pattern, Tips to pass easily

MRCS

The Membership Examination of the Surgical Royal Colleges of Great Britain and Ireland (the MRCS) is designed for surgical trainees in the generality part of specialty training. The MRCS examination is a crucial milestone in a surgical career; it determines whether a surgical trainee possesses the correct knowledge, skills and attributes to complete basic training and to progress to higher levels of specialist surgical training.

When to start preparing?

The biggest mistake candidates do is waiting for the last moment to start their preparation. A candidate who takes the exam for the first time needs at least 4 months to get a good grasp of the surgical topics and understand the foundation for the exam.

When you start early, you can prevent the risk of rushing through topics and missing through topics.  As always, time is required to read, understand and train to get the skills to pass an exam.

MRCS Part A Paper Pattern and Tips to pass easily

  • One must remember that the exam consists of 2 papers.
  • 1st paper has 180 MCQs and extends for 3 hours with a 10 minute break in between.
  • 2nd paper is having 120 MCQs and extends for 2 hours. Each MCQ is given only 1 minute only. Try your best to finish each question within 50 seconds.
  • If you are doubtful about a question Flag it and Re-attempt them ONLY when you have completed answering all the questions.
  • If you do not know an answer, try to choose the most logical and the nearest answer. Attempt all questions!
  • You might find some questions which are long or scenario based. The way to tackle them is to first read the question and look at the scenario to pick the clues.
  • The questions will sometimes play with the language. So be very careful while reading the question. It was said that questions with “UNTRUE”, “UNLIKELY”, “FALSE” or “NOT” will not be added for the exam. But, if there are such questions make sure you read carefully.
  • Take the break of 10 minutes after 90 question of the paper 1. Do not continue without it. Earlier the most overwhelming part of the exam was answering 180 questions continuously. It used to make the candidate tired during the last hour of the exam and that exhaustion can also be dragged to the paper 2 after the break. So take all advantages you are allowed.
  • Fuel up yourself with instantly available glucose, sugars and a cup of coffee during the breaks. It will help you refresh and also do a bit of stretching if your body feels stiff after staying in the same position for long hours.
  • Avoid reading anything in the morning or discussing any answers or questions of the paper 1 with anyone during the breaks. Relax and get ready for the next paper.
  • It is normal to feel overwhelmed in the second paper and you might even feel exhausted. But remember as a surgeon, you cannot give up in the middle of a surgery. Similarly, keep on moving forward one question at a time.
  • Finish the exam with a positive attitude!
